Financial Aid

At Primary Day, we seek to attract qualified students from a range of backgrounds and family income levels. The Board of Trustees has established funds to aid those families who need financial assistance in order to meet tuition costs. Primary Day offers only need-based financial aid; there are no merit awards. We use School and Student Services (SSS) by NAIS to evaluate financial aid applications. Based on a family’s financial information, SSS provides Primary Day with an estimated amount that a family can contribute towards educational expenses, which helps the school make objective financial aid decisions. Families must apply for financial aid annually. When awarding financial aid, priority is given to students who are currently enrolled. Families who have a change in financial circumstances during the school year may also apply for financial aid. Remaining financial aid resources are allocated to new families. The deadline for submitting a completed application to SSS is February 1, 2017.

Detailed information about the financial aid process at Primary Day may be found on our website.

Who is Beako?

Beako is a bird, but no ordinary bird. He's a magical bird who represents to the children a commitment to core values and character development. The children are taught about Beako and The Golden Rule from day one at Primary Day. Beako's message is clear: treat others the way you would like to be treated. Beako is present to the children at Beako assemblies, where the children perform in front of parents, grandparents and friends…an important process that leads to the development of self-confidence and public speaking skills.

Beako, the Primary Day School mascotBeako was the creation of Marie Buckley, a co-founder and first Director of Primary Day. Mrs. Buckley was a master teacher who had a magical quality to her. She first introduced Beako to her students at an assembly in 1944. For his debut, he proudly wore a yellow ribbon around his neck inscribed with "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Teaching The Golden Rule was as important to Beako and Mrs. Buckley as the teaching of Phonovisual. The daily practice of respect for others became a hallmark of good citizenship at Primary Day.

During the leadership of Mazie Lloyd, Primary Day's second Director, Beako mastered Phonovisual. Through her careful teaching, Beako became proficient in all of his sounds, allowing him to enunciate more clearly when he spoke with Mrs. Lloyd. The topic of conversation was always The Golden Rule, of course. Showing kindness and respect for others was still very important to Beako.

Each subsequent Head of School has carried on Beako's tradition. They have all enjoyed instilling in students Beako's Golden Rule. Children celebrating birthdays receive magic powder from Beako at assemblies. The magic powder helps each child do his/her best work throughout the year and drives them to be thoughtful at both school and home.

Ask any of our graduates about their accomplishments and most likely you will hear reference to Beako and Primary Day. The love of reading, a strong intellectual curiosity and an excellent foundation in academic skills and work habits are all attributes cultivated here.
