Most Likely to Succeed, a documentary by Greg Whiteley, examines the history of education in this country, revealing the shortcomings of the traditional education model in today’s innovative workplace. The film highlights High Tech High, a public charter school in San Diego that abandoned tests and compartmentalized subjects for a student-focused, project-based curriculum.

Educator Bios

Phyllis L. Fagell, Pyle Middle School
Phyllis Fagell is a professional school counselor at Pyle Middle School and licensed clinical professional counselor. She also is a freelance writer at the Washington Post with a focus on topics including education, counseling, and parenting. Phyllis has three children in elementary and middle school.

Lisa Gerhardt, Wheaton High School
Lisa Gerhardt has been a secondary teacher for over 20 years. Since 2002, she has worked at Wheaton High School in Montgomery County as a biology teacher, staff development teacher, and bioscience teacher. She is currently Project-Based Learning Coordinator at Wheaton High School, where she works with teachers and administrators to embed more authentic projects and problems into daily classroom instruction. She is working on completing an administration certificate, in order to become a school-based administrator. She lives in Silver Spring with her husband and two elementary-age boys.

Matthew Gould, Norwood School
Matthew joined Norwood as head of school in July of 2014 after serving as head of Community School in St. Louis, Missouri for 10 years. He was an active member of the Independent Schools of St. Louis, chairing the Teacher Hiring Fair to Promote Diversity, which resulted in 21 teachers of color being hired by local independent schools in the St. Louis area since 2007. He believes that children gain deeper knowledge and valuable skills by exploring and responding to real-world questions, problems, and challenges. Matthew holds a Ph.D. in education from the University of Chicago.

Nic Ryba, Green Acres School
Nic Ryba was educated in the UK and came to the National Institutes of Health after completing her PhD. She currently explores science with middle school students, and is the technology coordinator at Green Acres School in Rockville. Nic has three children who were educated in Montgomery County public schools.

Joshua P. Starr, PDK International (moderator)
Dr. Joshua P. Starr has been CEO of PDK International since July 2015. Prior to that, he served as Superintendent of Schools of Montgomery County, MD from 2011-2015 and Stamford, CT from 2005-2011. Josh is also a member of KID Museum’s Board of Directors.

  • Student engagement in school plummets as they get to higher grades—from 80% in elementary school to just 40% by the beginning of high school.
  • A Lego Foundation study reports that students lose more than 90% of their creative capacity during their school years.
  • 65% of today’s grade-school children will end up in jobs that haven’t been invented yet.
